Why Are We Here

While Apocalypse Now is not a true depiction of war, the movie is decidedly anti-war. After looking for mangoes in the jungle the platoon is attacked by a tiger. In Chef's breakdown, Willard sympathizes, "Don't get out the boat." This line is so symbolic not only for the Vietnam war but any international conflict. Don't get off the boat, do not get involved is what he says.

"The main trend regarding U.S. foreign policy since the American Revolution is the shift from non-interventionism before and after World War I, to its growth as a world power and global hegemony during and since World War II and the end of the Cold War in the 20th century."(Wikipedia).

The foreign policy shift has led to wars in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. The movie makes a point to criticize foreign policy and U.S. involvement in Vietnam. The movie questions America  interventionist foriegn policies in war.
