Achede makes many
objections to The Heart of Darkness. One of his many objections is against the
idea of colonialism. Colonialism is the movement of western nations invading
Africa for their land and raw materials. Achede makes the argument against
colonialism saying who are the westerners to think they are above the Africans.
In Apocalypse Now a form of colonialism is apparent as well. The American
troops view themselves above Vietnamese
people by asserting control over them. In both The Heart of Darkness and
Apocalypse now the natives have invaders come into their homeland and try to
destroy and change things for the invaders own benefit without sympathy. Both
pieces show that the invaders feel superiority to the natives for illegitimate
reasons. Both stories also draw parallels between each other because in both
show how the invaders dehumanize the natives. I believe this may be necessary in a war in order to be able to cope and come to terms
with killing others.
Very interesting points particularly about colonialism. In both stories the invaders did have "illegitimate reasons" to look down upon their enemy and see them as nothing more than complete savages and take over their homes without care. I agree with you completely in your last sentence as it very well could be a necessary trait in order to "come to terms with killing others" in most soldiers however in Tim O' Brien we see that he is the complete opposite and loves his enemy.
