How to Tell a True War Story vs. Apocalypse Now

The main similarity that I saw in Apocalypse Now and How to Tell A True War story was the presentation when narrating events. For example, how a soldier sees a war. In both Apocalypse Now and How to Tell a True War Story, both describe the war as a peaceful and oddly beautiful event. In the first couple of minutes of the movie, during a flashback, the music that was playing over the bombings and the helicopters portrayed it almost like an art form. Tim O'Brien describes some of his most tragic events in a tragically beautiful way. For example, Kurt Lemon's death. By comparing these two themes, it's apparent that how soldiers view war is a lot different than how we, as outsiders, see war. Perhaps there, the soldiers experience something that becomes so special to them that war eventually becomes an addiction.

  1. You are right. Perhaps there is a beauty to war that we, as outside observers, miss entirely. Maybe we need to physically be there in the heat if these intense moments to fully grasp the majesty of it all. On the other hand, maybe all of the traumas from fighting in a war creates different perspectives for the soldiers. Perhaps they are forced to see the beauty in all situations since what they are viewing at any given moment may be the last thing they ever see.
