The things I carried while traveling the world for 3 months

I couldn’t contain my excitement as I started to prepare for my trip to Europe, South Africa & some parts of Asia. This was an adventure I had been dreaming about for a very long time and it was finally time to embark on my journey. I had just graduated high school and decided to take some time off and explore the world. I was ready for new chapter in my life. Even though I was nervous about leaving home and my friends, I was very much looking forward to seeing many parts of Europe, South Africa, Dubai, India, China, and Thailand. Along with me I brought: a backpack, essential items such as passport, phone, laptop, iPod, visa (for India), money, camera (new underwater one I received as a graduation gift), books, vaccination documents, feelings of anxiety about being in unknown places, a nice warm sweater for cold weather, my grandparents address in Denmark, contacts of friends in different countries, just one suitcase (because my mom always told me to travel light, especially since I would be doing a lot of walking), I also needed extra space for things I would buy along the way, clothes (for all types of weather), some comfortable shoes, make-up, jewelry I didn’t even need, the thrill of exploring new places and meeting new people, extreme happiness, travel books, fear of not knowing how to speak the language or getting lost, maps, sadness about being away for so long, and lastly pictures of my family to give to my grandparents. From the beginning until the end of my trip, I took endless amounts of pictures and made unforgettable memories I will carry forever. This experience is something I will always carry with me wherever I go.

  1. I love that you put it as more of a narrative and a way of telling a story rather than a list because it helps me understand more of the context of why you brought those things. I like that this is very conversational and casual which is a little more like Tim O'Brien's writing style. I also liked that you mentioned the things you brought but didn't even use/need because I think ever traveler has been through that - overpacking so much that you don't even use half the things you brought and it definitely adds to the weight.

  2. Sounds like you had an incredible trip. Your mixed feelings of excitement and nerves definitely come through. I like that you included an introductory and concluding section as well as the list itself and especially liked the concluding line about how this experience still affects you.
