Ignorance

This book has made me begin to see the war a bit differently.  I was very suprised to learn that Naema was a medical student and that her father encouraged her to continue her studies while not at home.  I was also suprised that she spoke very good English , had a fiance that she was able to choose herself, and was allowed out on her own.  These things are the opposite of some of the customs i expected while reading this book.  It just goes to show how ignorant Americans can be, myself included.
On the contrary, I was suprised to hear how awfully the men treated Kate.  They demeaned her, made her work harder, and harassed her, just because she was a female.  I was continuously in shock becasue she came to the war the same way as the rest, and she was fighting for the same reason, but they made her partially the enemy.  It makes me wonder if a lot of the women in the army experience the same kind of treatment, and how I would react in that situation.
