It
is hard to choose which character to sympathize with more, Kate or Naema.
Obviously, Naema’s story is incredibly tragic. She has to live with the
violence moving in on her life and taking away her family and friends and loved
ones. She just wants peace, and for the suffering of her people and country to
end but she can do nothing but wait for answers that will never come. Kate on
the other hand joined the army to be brave and heroic and fight for her country,
but she is being constantly degraded and criticized and mistreated. Not only
that, but she can be of no real use if she is given no information and is
forced to perform unimportant but dangerous tasks. Telling the story on both
sides really shows that in war, there is no winner.
