Torture & Ethics

Zero Dark Thirty reveals the methods used in warfare to get information from enemy prisoners. They visualize the controversy of torturing captives in some kind of twisted trade for information for one party's benefit. This raises the question of, should torture be an appropriate way to get information for the greater good? In this case, the information they want is information regarding Osama Bin Laden's whereabouts. Personally, I don't think that it should be used, however, I understand that it's not that easy. It unsettles me to think that people are putting other humans on the brink of death for information. However, I am aware that asking nicely won't get anyone very far either. Also, it is understood that these people have binds by working with Bin Laden. If they speak, they might be sacrificing something very dear to them but, on our end, we see these people who aided the man that killed thousands of people on 9/11. We want revenge and we may see it as, these people hurt and/or killed the ones we love so we want revenge by hurting them. In all, torture for information is a very tricky subject but I think that it should not be used.

  1. Interesting that in the movie, the most valuable piece of information- the phone number- was bought with a Lamborghini and not tortured out of someone. Perhaps information is more easily bought than stolen.
