Friday Class Discussion

Joshua LaViolette's visit to our class shows me a different perspective on the war. Most of the class has portrayed war from a very negative light. People getting killed, their rights being violated, and their lives being forever altered are regular themes of the class. It often seems like our class and subsequently our college has an agenda, a goal to train students into a certain way of thinking. Mr. LaViolette's visit gave the army a positive light. It showed me that the army does some good in spite of all the horrible things that happen in and around them. That it can be an enjoyable experience through stories like when he had to give birth to the baby in the middle of the night. That its hard work bringing supplies up a mountain but it can be rewarding through a job well done especially, when lives are saved under fire. Most importantly he showed that while the Army is not for everyone it is a place where brotherhood and loyalty still live and help people grow from immature boys into men who can contribute to the world.

  1. I said the same thing in my blog. I think he showed everyone how the military can be a wonderful life altering experience as opposed to just trauma and gore, which I think is really important for young people to know. I think he should talk to students of the school and promote his positive message and positive experiences; it was definitely inspiring to me.
