Modern Warfare

The film Zero Dark Thirty shows how war in the age of terrorism has changed tremendously. I believe the film presents the most prevalent change in the age of terrorism as the fact that fighting a war on terrorism itself is extremely difficult because you have no clear idea of who the enemy is. In the age of terrorism a nation is no longer fighting a nation in which the enemy is clearly stated. In the age of terrorism a country fights a small, nameless entity while trying to figure out who is a part of that small, nameless entity.

The viewer is presented this fact when Maya and Jessica are looking at all of the pictured faces on the board they have yet to catch. The film proves that the enemy becomes harder to fight when the enemy is a group of about 20 men scattered throughout various parts of the Middle East communicating through various forms of technology, but never meeting.

I believe the film portrays an effective portrait of just how difficult it is to work for the CIA or any branch of intelligence within the U.S. government that deals with diplomatic issues. Overall, the film is very well done and intriguing to the end.

  1. I completely agree with you. The age of terrorism has very much blurred the face of an enemy, the enemy could be anyone and anywhere. The enemy is not an entire country but a group that anyone could belong to. It is very difficult to determine who is an innocent civilian and who is the actual enemy.
